Compulsory/ OR.

“It’s compulsory and you have to do it.” How many times have you heard this line?

Anything which is compulsory doesn’t mean that it is justified to be compulsory.

Being compulsory simply means that it is mandatory whether you like it or not.

In a situation of compulsory or “OR”, the most fun occurs when both of them are at loggerheads with each other.

Sometimes “OR” contradicts the compulsory tag.

It’s most serious effect can be seen in question papers, where the first three questions are compulsory and the rest of the ten questions go with “OR”.

But the real fun happens when the student hasn’t prepared either for the compulsory question and the “OR” question is nearly as same as the compulsory question. Generally this is done by teachers who like to select two questions from the same page, topic or chapter.

While travelling to many places, the question of “compulsory/ OR” comes into play.

Suppose you are travelling to a hill top restaurant, therefore it is compulsory for you travel by a cable car, as there is no other mode of transportation.

While travelling to various island destinations, the most valid form of travelling is air travel. Sometimes the only option is air travel.

The “OR” form of travel would entail travelling by ship for many days altogether.

While travelling to very few island countries, you have to take air taxi to reach the destination island after you land at the main airport. The air taxis can take off and land on water. They are also known as amphibious planes.

In a game of basketball you don’t have the option of kicking the ball, while in football you can’t touch the ball.

In cricket you can kick the ball but there remains a chance of you being given out as L.B.W. plus there are few regulation about kicking a ball, so there is an “OR” option in cricket but the danger remains.

So, one has to be very mindful while choosing either of the “compulsory\ OR”. It’s better to be sure while selecting either of the two, or one can remain hanging between them.

Mental Maths.

Doing mental maths in our mind is like deciphering the weather for the next midnight on our own.

When I was small I used to have a mental maths book and whenever my maths teacher would give me a star, I would show it to Ma.

With higher forms of calculations, the chances of a mistake occurring is very high.

Mathematical calculations of simple form such as 11 x 8 = 88 is easier said than done, but a calculation of 236 x 89 = ? simply boggles our mind. The calculation 236 x 89 is not a tough sum but it is slightly complicated to be done in one’s mind.

Mental maths when done in a properly calculated manner and with a calm and cool mind gives correct result 99% of the time.

Mathematics is a very vast branch. Be it any form such as addition, subtraction or derivation or integration, trigonometry, etc., can be done mentally.

The only thing that needs to be taken care of while performing mental maths is exercising the calculation perfectly with extra care being taken that there are no mistakes in noting the calculating numbers.

Suppose the given sum is 24 x 2.

24 x 2 = 48.

While doing it mentally, you take it to be 24 x 3 = 72 and that’s where the error occurs in mental maths.

Mental maths is fun, it is a good type of exercise for the brain and with daily practice and a lot of clarity, proficiency and efficiency in mathematics can be gained.

Have fun while doing mental maths and be happy.

February Afternoon.

It’s the month of February. The Chinese New Year, The Year of the Pig has just begun.

Each year February is warmer than December and January but this year it’s chilly.

Since, this afternoon, cold winds have been blowing and it made me put on a warmer shirt.

The most unique thing about such afternoons are you can simply go off to sleep in your cosy beds, under warm blanket and sleep till whatever time you want to. If you sleep off till evening, then you can make a cup of nice warm tea and have it with pakodas (an Indian food, which is fried and is very tasty and crispy to eat. It is loved by all Indians) or croissants.

Nothing makes a chilly evening happier than a cup of warm tea.

Enjoy your tea.

Yesterday has passed off.

Yesterday has passed off. Today is a new day.

The moment the clock struck 00:00 am, a new day began.

A day of hope, of freshness, of love, of grace.

Some tear off previous day’s calendar page to place the new date in the front.

Just like that torn off yesterday calendar page, new day also signifies that yesterday is gone and the new day is the present.

Had the rules been great, then the loans taken previously could be torn off with the tearing of the calendar pages. But alas! That doesn’t happen.

So be happy, be cheerful, yesterday has simply passed off, but the present day is alive, rocking and kicking.
